Amazing over 2,000 Austell Georgia Residents might be homeless

The aftermath of destructive waters has left thousands homeless in the south Cobb County city of Austell this week.

Several creeks, such as Sweetwater Creek and Noses Creek, merge in this town of about 7,000. But they swelled to biblical proportions this week, leaving a silty mess in their wake.

More than 2,000 people in Austell have lost their homes or face substantial home damage as a result of Monday’s deluge, Cobb County Commission Chairman Sam Olens said.

Cobb County’s Emergency Management Agency has estimated that up to 40 percent of the homes in Austell were ruined or significantly damaged, Olens said. Powder Springs could also face significant damage, Olens said.

“This is an historic flood,” he said.

Many of the displaced residents have found shelter with friends and family, and about 215 people from flood-affected areas stayed at the American Red Cross shelter at Cobb Civic Center on Wednesday night. The shelter is one of several the Red Cross has been operating in the metro area

Georgia Floods are Epic Proportions

"Epic" is how officials are describing the floods that hit metro Atlanta earlier this week.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the floods were a "once in 500 years flood," meaning the odds of such a thing happening are less “than 0.2 percent in any given year.”

"It is epic!" said Brian McCallum, assistant director for the USGS Water Science Center in Georgia. “The USGS can reliably say just how bad these floods were.”

They are calling this a 500-year flood because of the likeliness of it occurring is so rare, said McCallum. "We could have another flood next year, or floods back-to-back and still be considered 500-year floods because of the probability."

Why I did not get flood insurance

Flood insurance is typically around $300 to $500 dollars. I was not required to get flood insurance because i did not live in the flood plains. Well tell that to the people who got flood damaged. It is very sad that most of them will have to come out their own pockets to pay for their damage.
